SuperYacht Repair here at ST Engineering
FOUR SEASONS EXPLORER (FS Explorer) is a Passenger Ship that was built in 2002 (19 years ago) and is sailing under the flag of Maldives. With a carrying capacity is 592 Gross Tonnage and her current draught is reported to be 1.7 meters. This superyacht has an overall (LOA) is 39 meters and her width is 12.32 meters.
ST Engineering welcomed her latest docking in Apr 2021 where several major works were required for completion within a period of 8 weeks. Critical activities include repair of paint damages underwater and re-painting of entire external hull to a high gloss mirror finish. With other work including superstructure and aluminum hull plate renewal, propulsion system overhaul, rudder repair, renewal of engine room pipes, deck fitting works, air conditioning replacement and cleaning of tanks.
With long proven track record in superyacht repairs, we were delighted when the owner chose us to execute such detailed quality work within a tight timeline. Despite numerous Covid restrictions these few months, we were better in management of our resources even with reduced manpower at our yards.
Painting of the entire external hull from underwater hull to the top side of Superstructure requires immaculate preparation and carefully timed application. Upon docking, FS Explorer was transferred directly from the syncrolift to our covered H workshop. A complete scaffolding structure was erected around the vessel with white canvas covering the entire external hull to offer additional protection to the finishing of the hull.
Once the canvas covering was atop, washing and cleaning was carried out expeditiously on the hull, underwater and top side to kickstart the paint works of the entire vessel. After the existing paint work was inspected and repair, sanding of the hull was done painstaking to create the necessary surface condition before our special skilled painters applied the high gloss paint on the external hull and her superstructure.
Air dust extractor were installed within the various location of the area to maintain a clean environment and provided additional protection coverage to achieving the good paint quality, with only approved material used for the job.
Since the last docking of the FS Explorer more than five years ago, the hull condition definitely required a good overhaul. Major plate renewal was required for the underwater hull and tunnel bottom plate. Apart from the major painting and hull works, other repair works were also carried out accordingly:
– Installation of Petrol Rack
– Installation of Purifier system
– Renewal of life saving equipment’s
– Repair of Palfinger Tender
– Withdrawal of talishaft, propeller & rudders
– Remove & reinstall main engine and generators
– Air condenser servicing
– Overhaul of system valves
– Renewal of system piping & insulations
– Tank cleaning & other fittings works
The biggest challenge for us could be the mobilization of skilled manpower under the current Covid-19 restrictions. However, we were confident with our highly skilled manpower for the painting and hull works to be deployed over a very tight schedule. With enhanced co-ordination and strong trust and communication between the Owner and our team led by SRM Teh Chia Wee, work disruptions were brought down to the minimum by Yard resources and the works were completed within the stipulated period of time, and sailed off as scheduled.
“I will definitely consider returning back to yard of ST Engineering for our future repairs as the level and range of skills available is difficult to match anywhere but especially in Asia and even more so in a yard willing to apply those skills to yacht type vessels. Excellent experience!” says Superintendent Neil Wilton. With all works were completed swiftly and safely as planned. The owner was very satisfied with the assignment and commended ST Engineering for meeting the project objectives through meticulous project planning and strong execution! We hope to welcome her back in our sunny island again.
